… and Billie Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge.
Made it into C-bus in time to catch the last half of the Indiana-Purdue game, then drove down to see the first half of the Central Michigan-Bowling Green game. Why only the first half? Because in the bottom of the 4th inning (and in the words of the Pat Travers Band) it was boom-boom-out-go-the-lights at VA Memorial Stadium as a blackout hit the town of Chillicothe.

No, this isn't some artsy picture I took to be edgy, it's the scene immediately after the lights went out at the MAC tourney game between Central Michigan and Bowling Green.
So now, the Chippewas and Falcons will resume play at 9am tomorrow – which is 6am my time – before the rest of the day’s action can pick back up.
Worse part is that the MAC tournament plays four games a day, so tomorrow’s games might end at about 1am Friday… or worse.
Here are some pics I have from my first day in Ohio for the post-season tournaments:

I found Huntington Park to be freakin’ incredible. All the whistles and bells makes for a great, great venue for the Big 10 to hold its tournament. I’ll post more pictures of it as the week goes on. Just know that it is first class all the way.
.

IU’s Eric Arnett, with the 91mph indicator on the scoreboard behind him (he would hit 95-96). The high-round draftee-to-be struck out 10 in 7.0 innings of 4-hit work. After the game, IU coach Tracy Smith told him after the game, “Get ready for more work this week, big boy.”
.

Coach Smith in the post-game with two of his players, LF Kipp Schutz and pitcher Eric Arnett, both of whom, I found out tonight, played basketball for the Hoosiers this past season. (If Bobby Knight had a grave he’d be rolling over in it right now).
.

Being a fellow motorcycle rider, it always amazes me that people ride with no protection whatsoever. Ohio evidently doesn’t have a helmet law. Then again, who’s stupider, the guy on a motorcycle with no helmet on? Or me for taking this picture while driving on the freeway?
.

Central Michigan’s Robbie Harmon (left) came into tonight’s abbreviated game with a .242 average and one home run all season. In his first two at-bats here he hit a two-run single in the 2nd inning and a solo dinger in the 4th.
.

Maybe this blackout tonight was a good thing for No. 1 seeded Bowling Green because nothing seemed to go their way. Like here when Chippewa catcher Dale Cornstubble tagged out BG’s Ryan Shay on a great play at the plate.
.

After the blackout, it was so dark nobody noticed me walking out onto the field and taking this picture of VA Memorial Stadium’s old-school manual scoreboard. Ironic that the billboard below it is for Chillicothe Electrical Supply, eh?
.

They were holding the flashlight under their faces and telling ghost stories!… Actually this is the MAC officials and umpiring crew discussing what to do about the game during the blackout.
.

The Dr. of college baseball sent a few pics from North Carolina’s 8-3 win over Duke. Apparently Adam Warren had one of his best outings of the season, holding the hated Dookies to three runs and six hits in 8+ innings.
.

Can you see the fear in the Devils faces in the background? Dustin Ackley launched two yard calls tonight in the win.
.

Kyle Seager had a nasty-dirty-filthy game, and I don’t mean his uniform here. The Heel leader went 3-for-3 with two walks. That’s huge.

South Carolina gets extra inning win in Hoover…at 2 AM!All in front of a huge Alabama contingent.
KC says:
Eric, I’m embarrassed to admit I spent time looking into this, but you seem to have mixed the themes of two 70s songs in your title. “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” was a hit for Vicki Lawrence of Carol Burnett Show fame. Billie Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge in the Bobbie Gentry song, “Ode to Billie Joe.” That definitive source of irrelevant information, Wikipedia, described both of these songs as “Southern Gothic”, whatever the hell that means.
My, the range of topics your columns cover, from Frank Zappa and the Dead Schembechlers to Vicki Lawrence. Just hope you keep out any musical references to Cher or John Tesh.
Back to the subject of baseball- who are your choices for national pitcher of the year and national player of the year at this point?
Stitch-head says:
KC, you win the free turkey and complimentary Falstaff when I get to Omaha for knowing (or researching) the two songs. And yes, I did that mixed-song thing on purpose. But I had forgotten it was Vicky Lawrence that sang the “Night the lights went out…” song.

Stitch: Ryan Berry had a great game today. He may be back to his early season form. Good news for Rice.
In CUSA tournament news, the tournament schedule has been revised. Heavy rains are expected Saturday so those games have been rescheduled for Friday. Check the new schedule at the CUSA web site.
