Having been raised in Omaha and spending many summer nights scampering through Rosenblatt Stadium long before the ESPN cameras ever showed up . . .
This is a combative conference where it’s obvious that anybody can beat anybody and pitching is a mere suggestion. But I will say this, if you doubt the OVC’s ability, go and ask Alabama, Oklahoma or Vanderbilt. They are just a few of the victims from last season.

This is one conference that lives by the Johnny-come-lately philosophy. One season, you’re in the dregs at the bottom of the standings, a year later you’re celebrating a title. That’s the nature of the NEC. Either way, at least it makes things interesting.

With their own TV network, the No. 1 player in the draft and some of the best facilities in the country, there’s a lot to like about the MWC. Just like the conference’s tagline, this conference is ready to “play up” in 2010. How far they get is manifest destiny for each program.

It’s been hard times for the hard-scrabble conference as the Valley boys have been missing marquee status and multiple bids for a couple years now. The effort is there, the talent is building and it’s just a matter of time until they’re back to the Valley of Doom for their opponents, not themselves

I was going to try to write something about the entire conference, but as I started typing, all that came out was “BCU… BCU… BCU.” The Cats have owned the rights to any and all materials in the MEAC since 2006. No changes here.

Always underrated and over-heated, the MAC powers on with some of the most exciting championship chases in the country. Don’t believe what you see in February and March, it’s May that these guys hit their stride and by that time, they’re giving each other broken egos.

The MAAC definitely has it favorites – and it always seems like those favorites end up flopping in the conference tournaments. So just call this the “Free-for-all” Conference, where looking good and winning titles don’t mean anything unless you do it at just the right time.

The smart boys continue to do things the right way, graduating brilliance, playing a two-team playoff to decide the NCAA tournament bid and playing an education-first reasonable number of games. No wonder we always cheer for the champion here in the Big Dance.

Despite some growing pains, the Independent ranks, which are much thinner thanks to the new Great West Conference, still has some good teams with an unlimited potential for growth. Dallas Baptist remains a solid contender for post-season tournament bids, while waiting for Bakersfield to slowly get itself to that point. It will happen, just give it time people.

The Flames of Illinois-Chicago have burned through the Horizon the last two years. But we all know this is one of those “whoever gets hot at the tournament” propositions here. Too bad too. This conference has some wicked regular season title chases.
