After growing up in Omaha, Nebraska and skinning his knees on the concrete walkways of Rosenblatt Stadium, Eric has had college baseball in his veins for as long as he can remember. When the College World Series was going on each June, his parents would drop him and his friends off at the stadium in the morning and pick them up after the last game that night. Poor parenting? Sure. But it also fueled his fever for the sport that much more.
Eschewing the normal journalistic road to sports writing, Eric has been an advertising copywriter for years. He admits that creative background has added to his unconventional approach to sports writing and is a main contributor to his unique style.
Eric’s “addiction” to college baseball writing began back in the late 90s, when he became one of the original national writers for the sport. In the years that followed, he has covered college baseball for such media outlets as USA Today, CSTV, CBS Sportsline, CBS College Sports, College Baseball Insider and his current gig with College Baseball Today.
Living in Southern California with his wife Mandy, Eric sits in one of the hotbeds of college baseball. When he’s not covering a game or writing about the sport, he enjoys surfing, snow skiing, playing hockey and rough-housing with his black lab “T.O.” Eric was also 7th runner-up in “The Most Interesting Man In the World” competition held by Dos Equis in 2009.
For those of you out there looking for big upsets in the college baseball landscape, this was certainly a good weekend for you. And it wasn’t just a win here, a win there, like a chicken pecking corn in the feed lot. We’re talking mid-major and even low-major teams out there winning weekend series against the fat cats of the college sports world.
Brendan Dougherty and the Coastal Carolina coaching staff have leadoff man Rico Noel and the rest of the Chanticleers pointed in the right direction.
I mean, when was the last time you saw teams like LeMoyne, Southeastern Louisiana and Western Kentucky listed in the Team of the Week feature? Never, right? Well here we are now people. All three are included in this week’s honorees.
So, how did your team do this weekend? Look like a promising season? Or a long one full of frustration? Don’t worry, it’s only one weekend people. Don’t get too high or too low about things.

Oklahoma SS Caleb Bushyhead played a big hand in OU's solid weekend.
But I do know this, I noticed it was a good weekend for a lot of teams out there in college baseball-land that wear some shade of red. Stanford, Oklahoma, New Mexico, St. John’s, Texas State, etc. They left their opponents red faced-mad after what they did on the diamond this weekend.
Sorry this is a tad on the late side, had some computer/internet probs at the homestead on Monday. But all is well now. And all is well with Cal State Fullerton, Louisville, Alabama and Texas as well, since those four grab the top T.O.W. spots for the four regions from this past week.

Don't let the intense look fool you, Coach Dave Serrano is happy with the way his team has been playing lately.
Here’s a quick look as to why those four were chosen.
This was a redemption weekend on the college diamonds this week as some forgotten boys pulled the ole’ Houdini act and re-appeared on the national radar once again.
For example, when was the last time we made mention of Oregon State in a positive manner? When was the last time Coastal Carolina crossed your mind… in a good way? And who remembers the last time Dartmouth won a conference title of any sort? If you do, give yourself 10 bonus points, because that’s pretty impressive.

Check out this home run robbing catch made by Oregon State outfielder John Wallace vs. Arizona State.
Here’s this week’s Teams of the Week
So here we go. It’s time to dole out the final Teams of the Week honorees for the month of April in this 2009 season. So let’s raise our goblets and give proper toast to Clemson, Mississippi, Kansas State and TCU, the top four honorees from the different regions.

Bryan Holaday (16), who was named Mountain West Player of the Week, and Chris Ellington helped TCU win a pair of one-run games at San Diego State this weekend.
As the ball-busting Captain Hadley in Shawshank Redemption said to the roofers that had earned their beers, “Drink ‘em while they’re cold ladies.”
The road doesn’t get much easier from here.
After having what can best be described as a hiccup weekend for a lot of teams in the rankings, most of the teams you’ll see in this week’s Teams of the Week feature will be all-new to this list for this season.

After a Friday night fright, Vols coach Todd Raleigh pushed all the right buttons in a series win at LSU.
For instance, when do you ever expect to see the SEC’s last place team as one of the national teams of note? That’s just the kind of season it’s been here people.
So here are this past week’s teams you need to know about. All aboard, the mystery train full of mystery teams is now leaving the station.
Let me say right off the bat Stitch-heads. This week’s Teams of the Week recap may be a little bit on the abbreviated side compared to normal. Hope you guys aren’t too bent about that. Among other irons in the fire, I’m working on something for Thursday’s entry, so I need to devote more time to it.

Mike Martin discovered that Sean Gilmartin was locked in against North Carolina on Friday, giving up just three hits in 6.2 innings of work.
But I definitely wanted to make sure these teams get a fair amount of gloss for their great weeks on the diamond. So let’s snap to it. Going from East to West across your U.S. atlas, here’s how things shake out for the best of the best for each region of the country.
And if you think that I wrongly didn’t include your team… no worries, just complain louder.
When I say the words “George Mason” and “March” what comes to your mind? That’s right, you think about the magical roundball run, the NCAA tournament and that Gawd-awful “One Shining Moment” song they’ve worn to shreds. But if you took a look at the national college baseball landscape this weekend, you’d notice how well the Patriot stitched-ball team did this last bit of March-slash-first week of April.

One thing that IS for sure? It’s just that nothing in our beloved sport is for sure. There was a lot of upheaval in college baseball this weekend as most of the teams in the top 10 took it on the chin. Things are going to keep on changing week-in and week-out. That’s just what you get with the type of national balance like what we’ve seen the last few years.
So let’s get to the best of the best from the past week in college baseball. We’re going to go back to moving right to left across your atlas…
Well this is a rare opportunity. When is the last time we were able to laud an Ivy League school for their play? And why not? I was in the Northeast all weekend anyway. Might as well give a little more love to the region before I vamoose outta here.

Why is Dartmouth coach Bob Whalen smiling? Because his team played great last week and their reward is hosting their first home game coming up this week.
Looks like it’ll happen here though as Dartmouth put together a great week from all across the continent and gets the East nod on our list here.
Here’s how it all shook out this week.
Strange weekend, eh boys and girls? North Carolina losing to Duke in a sport other than basketball? Texas and its world-class pitching staff losing three games to a basketball school? Missouri finally reaching .500? Well, that was a long time coming actually.
It makes you wonder what we’re in for the rest of the season. What’s next, Team A scoring 29 runs in seven innings on Team B, who is 18-3?

Notice how Aaron Baker is smiling huge in this picture? You would be too if you just scored 431 runs on a really good Kansas State team.
On an absolutely unrelated note, Oklahoma leads our teams of the week honors for this week.
Stitch-head says:
I agree with Johnny Law there. Good point you brought up Fat Sam. It's always go
